Sense of pride:

Difference between pride and being prideful-

Prideful means having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy, as in haught or disdainful. Pride is having a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people.

Several meanings behind the term Pride -

Pride is a feeling of satisfaction which you have because you or people close to you have done something good or possess something good.

Pride is a sense of the respect that other people have for you, and that you have for yourself.

Someone's pride is the feeling that they have that they are better or more important than other people.

If you pride yourself on a quality or skill that you have, you are very proud of it.

A pride of lions is a group of lions that live together.

Synonyms for pride to take into consideration:

One's pride and joy

Pride of place

To swallow ones pride

Questions

What does the word pride mean to you?

Why does the word sometimes have a negative connotation?

Should your personal standard be less than excellence in all things?

What pride means to me:

There are a lot of things that i can be prideful towards, the main thing being the side effects towards my epilepsy and me trying to go a full year without having a seizure so that i can then apply for a driving license and slowly begin to take less tablets per day. If i am able to achieve this then I will feel ecstatic as it will be a real achievement in my life and I will be that one step closer to having a normal working life rather than being stuck at home, not working and without a car.

Pride also gives me a sense of enthusiasm and the will to succeed with the tasks set for me. I can admit that I'm not the most open-minded person, I like to keep my thoughts to myself and I usually don't like being told what to do , however if i need to improve my work by listening to others feedback then i can put their suggestions into my work and be proud to gain help from others so that I can succeed.

Idea 1:

( PLAN ) :

Genre ( Actuality film, fictional video )

This will be my final idea for my FMP, it will be to make a video based project around my topic of epilepsy and the fact that I am proud to have the condition and have been trying my hardest to go one year without having any seizures, to then being able to start driving and working full-time ( just to name a few ). I plan to include a mini-documentary of myself travelling to London and filming my conversation with the epileptic nurse, i will also include facts and statistics that she may leave out. I will also try to film a kidney scan or MRI scan that i have so then the viewers will get a closer look on how my brain works differently to others.

I am willing to explain the conditions i have been living with for the past 10 years, mainly to encourage the audience to potentially research more about epilepsy, however their may be difficulty explaining to audience about the different types of epilepsy that u can be diagnosed with, for example the first thing that people expect is for them to not deal with flashing lights however that is only people who have photosensitive epilepsy, but this is why i want to tell people about how big epilepsy is and how it can effect peoples lives .

Evaluation of primary research for idea 1:

From my questionnaire, the feedback that i have received is very interesting. This might be a touchy subject in that some people might not know much about but from the results given back this was definitely not the case. The answer that stood out the most from my questionnaire was how many people gave opinions on what they know about epilepsy, i didn't think that many people would know about it let alone have different and surprising thoughts. The most popular answer people gave was seizures is the first thing that came to mind about epilepsy, along with others such as flashing lights, pain, stress and tablet taking. It didn't surprise me that flashing lights was an example that was common between people, however this is just for people that have photosensitive epilepsy ( the most common epilepsy diagnosis ). Their are hundreds of other epileptic conditions that aren't effected by flashing lights, mine being one ( cortical dysplasia ) , absence seizures and focal seizures that begin in the brain.

I also received interesting results from a question that i asked about whether anyone knew any particular side effects that come with having seizures. Some included concentration , sleep patterns and stress, these are all common with the majority of epileptic diagnosis so i am very happy that the majority of people know the factors when it comes to having a seizure. Statistics taken from the questionnaire include; 73% of people know a friend that has epilepsy and tries to help them in anyway possible, also 73% of people believe that this project will help them understand more about epilepsy or give interest toward someone who may not know anything about it .

Finally i asked for any advice that people could give me going forward with this project, for example not overdoing the filming as this is a personal subject and not everything needs to be shared, as well as vox popping for pre - recordings and keep it linked to the topic of pride and not going overboard with having the project just based off of epilepsy, it needs to be linked with the pride to have epilepsy. Overall i am extremely happy with my results from my questionnaire, i didn't expect to be given very specific answers to some of the questions i asked, this will help me a lot when it comes to my final recording and knowing that the majority of the facts and statistics i will be sharing the majority should know.

Secondary research for idea 1 ( must include test shots or photos to give a preview on how I want my project to be filmed ):

My type of Epilepsy ( cortical dysplasia ) complex partial seizures -

HOW THEY OCCUR:

  • The seizure that starts in one area or side of the brain and the person is not aware of the surroundings during it is called focal impaired awareness seizure.

  • This term replaces complex partial seizures.

  •  seizures typically last 1 to 2 minutes.

  • These seizures may have an warning, which technically is itself a focal aware seizure.

  • These seizures include lip smacking, picking at clothes, fumbling, becoming unaware of surroundings, and wandering.

  • Many treatment options are available, including medications, diet and surgery.

My diagnosis of epilepsy is nowhere near as bad as what other people have to be put through on a day to day basis. One of the best ways for this to be treated would be cannabis oil, this has been a major debate within the news recently and all people suffering with epilepsy are trying desperately to have cannabis on prescription to treat their illness, this will prove to be a life saving treatment for most. As for now, only specialist doctors are able to prescribe cannabis to treat patients seizures, this became legal on the 31st October 2018 and the fact it is now legal, their has been a change in the law was the to process to make these medicines available to those who could benefit. This opens up a world of possibilities to sufferers of epilepsy and most notably mine that decreases the chance of me having a seizure to almost 0. This would automatically give me a sense of pride if I went without having a seizure due to this and i can then look towards getting a great job within the media industry and learn to drive, just to name a few positive outcomes to be proud of if cannabis oil takes the possibility of having a seizure away.

If i am able to get cannabis on prescription then i will start to believe that my life will get back to the levels it was before i was diagnosed, the sense of pride about myself will be sky-high, the thought of accomplishment will be the best. I have always had doubt when it comes towards looking into the future about what i would do to earn money, how i will travel and understanding tasks set by others, this will give me a perfect sense of pride and will motivate me to achieve these targets that were set to me years ago and was told that theirs no chance of my achieving any of my life goals.

IN this video it is explained by several doctors and scientists the basis of epilepsy, along with what the person may suffer with, why the seizures are happening and whats best to treat anyone who's just had a seizure infront of u. The history of it dates back centuries and is commonly known as 'fits'. It also includes many myths, the usual being that flashing lights does not effect everyone living with epilepsy. The majority of people living with epilepsy are young and it is unusual to develop epilepsy once past the age of 50. Other information it gives is how often fits/seizures can occur , what is usually causing them for example- stress, insomnia and depression and epilepsy patients are second most common within hospitals behind patients that suffer with strokes.

In this video is a short animation on how a seizure occurs , along with the different symptoms that it has and the after-effects that come with having a seizure, usually the need to sleep or spend time alone. The person might not want the whole world to know what their going through or suffering however shutting out the whole world and being by yourself is one of the worst ways to treat seizures the best way is to tell someone and have their support at all times.

Techniques to use when filming idea 1 and equipment for idea 1:

When filming i will have to film close-up the majority of the time so that the audience can see me talking and giving opinions about my epilepsy and how it can effect others. The equipment i will need to use is a tripod, ZOOM mic and HD panasonic camera, however this will limit the space i have to film at home so ill have to be careful not to damage anything. I need to be sure when recording that theirs no background noise that will effect my editing, their is an advantage to filming indoors than outside, that being weather and wildlife, when i film i need to have no noise as everything that i will be explaining about epilepsy needs to be heard, this is an important topic for some people and i want the majority of people that watch to become interested in the topic and research more about it afterwards.

3 ways that I can film idea 1:

1. Film and produce a day in the life of myself taking a trip to a hospital whether that be in maidstone or London, potentially film the conversation between the GP or epileptic specialist nurse so that the audience can be included in the conversation. I will then add my own opinions on the type of epilepsy i have and edit this down to a factual and learning based video production.

2. Be interviewed by someone else who also has epilepsy and get their opinions on having it and what pride they have achieved in their life so far, then compare our opinions towards having epilepsy and what both of us have accomplished. Comparing achievements that two different people that have epilepsy have will be very interesting for the audience and this could potentially help others who may have young kids or family members who have epilepsy.

3. Discuss about cannabis oil and medical marijuana that should be able to be put on prescription to decrease the number of seizures people with epilepsy are having. Bringing up some questions that have been asked online by people with epilepsy for example - How can I get medical cannabis for my child? or What types of medical cannabis are available to treat epilepsy?

Peer Review of Idea 1:

Peter Penfold - I like this idea as you have made it personal so you will have more motive to do create a nice finally video. I like the way that you have planned to do three ideas. I would like to see you evaluate the final project to see how you can improve it.

Matthew Dickson - I like the ideas and that fact that it is a personal video I feel like you'll be more passionate when creating the video. Just be sure you can keep to the topic of pride. There a lot of ways you could make this video so make sure you have a clear idea and keep on track when creating it.

IDEA 2:

GENRE- Documentary/factual

This was one of the other ideas that I came up with, I had planned to take a trip to a lion sanctuary or zoo then film the lions and show how they treat their cubs, what they eat to stay alive and just to get footage of how the lions live and what they do to stay alive. My plan was then to edit in a voice over of myself to play over the footage of the lions explaining what they do to stay healthy, the tasks that they may do on a day to day basis, this will then get some people to research more about a lions life, how they treat other animals and more. I also had an idea to include transitions to and from the footage of the lions to then have myself explaining opinions of lions and how the World Wildlife Fund want to avoid certain lion species going into extinction.

Overall i just want this project to be an eye-opener on how the public need to realise how close some animals are to not existing anymore, i would love to get people on side, to do more research on how they can help with the WWF to stop these animals from being punished in a way that they shouldn't have to in the first place. The main objective will be to have an agreement with people from the questionnaire but also have opinions from some that can then be discussed further in my film and have a short debate towards an answer someone may have bought up from my questionnaire.

Evaluation of primary research for idea 2:

From my questionnaire i received more interesting opinions and comments from some people that i will explain now and give my feedback on how i could use it to help my filming. To begin with, i wanted to find out how many people would understand what i wanted to talk about and address in this project so by asking the people how many of them had seen lions individually or as a pride ( together ) 80% of people had, 10% hadn't and 10% were unsure, i was happy with this result as it gave me confidence to then go forward with this idea as the majority would know what point I will try to get across. In summary i had the majority of three letter words to describe lions be the same, the most popular answers were, proud/prideful, strong and athletic. I would have to get footage of the lions showing the athleticism, strength and proud on camera just to prove that the answers people gave were taken as advice to then include in my project.

I also received many different opinions when it came to the question of how do people think lions survive in the wild, the answers that stood out were having other animals fed to them, the females controlling how much the young cubs should eat and how much the father should eat and the eating of meat and bones. This will be one of the main things i need to get on camera ( what the lions are fed ) this will stand out as their portions of food can be compared to humans or other animals which is quite shocking. The final reviews and opinions that i need to take under consideration for my project is what people said about my idea, does it interest them to research more about other animals in the wild as well as lions and improvements can i make before filming. The most noticeable answers people gave were to plan and give an example of what i intended to do for my film, also being given a title for my project, the lion king - and lastly i must keep this related to the topic of pride.

Although i'm not choosing this idea for my final project this would have been interesting to film however keeping it relatable to the topic of pride would be difficult and I think the other idea i have chosen to go with i can explain clearer than the this and the other.

SECONDARY RESEARCH OF IDEA 2:

Firstly, and in my opinion the most interesting opinion on endangered animals including tigers is from THE GUARDIAN - leo.hickman's verdict on this is very interesting he breaks the topic of endangered animals down to costings and local projects as quoted below:

"I don't instinctively like headline figures - as presented in this new study as being £50 billion a year - suggesting a grand total price tag for saving all species. The reality is that hundreds of local projects and initiatives will be required to protect all the endangered species around the world. "

He also goes on to give his opinion on saving species and protecting species:

"More importantly, though, I think to view this simply as "saving species" is wrong-headed. I think it far wiser to talk in terms of protecting habitats rather than the species that reside within them. After all, when we talk about protecting species we are actually talking about protecting habitats."

The majority of topics and notes he covers i agree with, mainly his opinon towards costings and his wise terms on protecting habitats. The fact theres an issue with figuring out the costs towards the possible adoption and saving species costing to much money, it shouldn't cost this much but theres nothing as of now that can change it, this means theres a possibility of them deciding there own fate if the work isn't put in to save the species.

African Lion species are the most in threat of extinction:

They are affected by - Habitat loss, fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade and human wildlife conflict.

Noted for being powerful, majestic and the king of all beasts they have no natural predators, however the numbers have dropped by over 40% in the last 3 decades, this is mainly because of loss of living space and conflict with people. They are known to be the most sociable when in their prides, the males will fight to maintain breeding rights. A whopping three quarters of African lions populations are in decline, this includes only 20,000 in the wild and are now classified as ' VUNERABLE ' .

Below is a small article from a regional manager of East Africa:

Where African lions roam and why they are important:

African lions used to be spread across most of the continent, but now are only found in Africa, with 80% in eastern or south Africa. Three of the five largest populations are in Tanzania. Lions have disappeared from 12 Saharan countries in recent decades.

Lions are top predators in their environment, whether that’s lands, desert or open woods. It means they play a crucial role in keeping a healthy balance of numbers among other animals, especially herbivores like zebras and wildebeest, which in turn influences the condition of grasslands and forests. By protecting a lion’s landscape, it can help the whole area to thrive, which doesn’t just benefit wildlife but the people who rely on local resources too.

Techniques and Equipment to use for idea 2:

The majority of the camera footage for this idea will have to be shot from a distance ( long-shot or even extreme long shot) this is because of the risk of getting hurt by the lions or pestering any of its relatives, zooming will be a key factor for the filming of this, I would have to film through the wires where their kept or try to film through glass however the reflection of the camera could become a problem with editing. The filming of this could be shot from a phone and then edited professionally or their is a possibility of being able to set a tripod up and a camera and then film the surroundings as well with a mic and maybe even Vox pop some members of the public on any opinions they may have toward the many species of lions that are becoming endangered. However taking all of this under consideration this won't be the final idea I choose to film my production on and thats mainly due to the issue I have with filming it, their may not even be anywhere where the lions can be filmed and if I'm not able to film the most important thing from this project then I would fail trying, the other advantage of not picking this is because filming outside can pick up background noise from others, yes the lions noise is what was required but I'm happy with the decision I have made and that isn't to use this idea for my FMP project.

3 ways this project could have been filmed:

1. Visit the smallest local area I can find, where there won't be many other people that will disturb the background noise when recording, if possible then the filming could be done on a professional camera rather than a phone it will all depend on how friendly the staff are and whether filming is allowed where there sanctuary is.

2. Ask staff whether filming could be done within the sanctuary or maybe a safe place thats hidden from the public but there being enough space to film the lions indoors, this is highly unlikely, the more chance I would have on able to do this would mean I would have to visit a well known zoo for example howlers or port lymme, the filming for this project was the main reason why I decided not to go ahead with this idea.

3. The only other chance I may have of filming for this topic is to contact anyone who knows how to film lions or whether they have had anyone try before, if it does happen that there has been someone who's tried it before then it'll be great  and I can take the information from the previous person who has done it and the editing then would have to be done to a professional standard so that my project idea looks great.

I was unable to get any test shots for this topic so I have had to use stock footage , this is another eason why Im not choosing this idea to film my FMP on:

Peer Assessments for idea 2:

Peter Penfold - This isn't a great idea for your FMP , it will be very difficult to get footage for this topic and also to keep it relevant to the topic of pride , you have made the right decision to not choose this idea. The editing would also be difficult as the background noise would effect your voiceover and potentially the transitions that you thought about doing when editing this. Also the fact that you were unable to get any test shots for this topic shows clearly that this isn't the idea to do your FMP towards so you've made the right decision to change it and go ahead with the other idea you have decided.

Dominic Cornford - This idea was pretty bad but you've made the right choice not to film on this idea, the footage is just to hard to get and you would be risking a lot on it to then edit it to a professional standard. It is much easier to film on the idea you've now chosen and the film as a whole should look a lot better.

IDEA 3 :

Genre- factual and entertainment.

I want to showcase how long it took me to finally pass GCSE English after three attempts , this is a huge life goal of mine accomplished and I plan to recreate the day that I opened the envelope and found out that after so long I had got one of the two major GCSE's out the way and how now it should be a little easier to find the right career path for me and to lead me into a brighter future. Their might be some people who are surprised that it took me that long long to pass but with my epilepsy ( my final idea that I've chosen to film on )it was always going to be a little harder for me as I easily forget things and usually need reminding of a few days later.

I want this to be shown to others because it can be used as life lesson to some and thats don't beat yourself up if you don't pass everything first time, they'll always be that same opportunity that will come back to you eventually and also don't begin anything important that matters to you with a negative attitude, that is the worst thing to have when leading up to an important event , staying positive is the key.

Evaluation of primary research for idea 3:

For this questionnaire i received some very interesting facts, statistics and opinions, to begin with I asked who many times it took the people who did the questionnaire to pass english. And after several responses came some quite surprising results, a combined 80% of people took between 1 and 2 times to pass which in this generation where the pass marks are increased pretty much every year its becoming harder and harder to pass, so these people who all passed after 1 or 2 tries should be proud of themselves, for the people who had to take more than 2 english exams shouldn't beat themselves down and be too harsh towards there own achievements, its the fact that passing the exam is the main thing and could open many doors when starting a new career. More surprising results were gathered when i asked how people felt when they got the news that they had passed english, some said that they felt surprised and not that confident before collecting their exam results.

This is normal for some people who may have confidence issues, however its always better for people to be confident and no matter what support others that may be struggling and worried about their future if they've failed. Their were a few who did give positive feedback such as, ' i felt joyful and ecstatic ' also, ' i felt like i was going to pass out and very happy wanting to know my results after the exam had literally finished'. Only 50% of people thought that passing a major subject like english would help them to start their dream career/job, whilst 30% said that they wouldn't need it that much and 20% were unsure. These statistics were understandable to an extent, the main thing being that at the age of 16 the majority of students won't have an idea of what they want to do as a career or a dream job, the responses that i received were understandable and believable.

Further responses i received were surprisingly only 60% of people felt that they had full support from their family and friends going into exams whilst 30% were unsure and 10% said that they didn't get the support they wanted from friends and family. As much as this is shocking, there are some terrible supporting families around the country, their will be some that'll just expect the kids to revise by themselves and know what is needed to pass exams it all depends on how parents treat their kids some expect to have a mature teenager that is intelligent and know what their doing while as some will have the complete opposite, no confidence and negative thoughts on their results.

More people haven't learnt another language other than english, 50% of people wouldn't want to re-do or have their paper remarked to try and gain a higher grade, 60% said that i shouldn't use this idea for my FMP which i have decided that i'm not going to be using this for my FMP topic and finally improvements that some people have given me for this idea have been: showcase other peoples opinions and reactions, keeping it related to the topic of pride and film a live reaction of a person opening their results, all of these i would take into consideration however im not going to be using this idea for my final FMP film.

As some of you may know, through the past few years the pass mark has been increased to an all time high, however this isnow putting more pressure upon students to pass this as they now have to study a lot harder than prior students. The English GCSE language pass grade across two papers was 80/170, so just under 50% correct across both papers.  The guardian published their own article giving stats and statistics on the new grade boundaries set up by the AQA or Edexcel companies, as they went on to state that the headline pass rate fell by 2.1 percentage points to 66.9% attaining C grade or above, and falls in the proportion winning the highest A* and A grades.

When I opened mine over 2 years ago I wasn't overly confident but staying positive was key, I wasn't interested in what other people had achieved, of course I was happy for them and that they could take their next step on the career paths they are after but of course its understandable to only concentrate and look forward to your own grades rather than others. Now the ' THEORIES' behind the grade boundaries increasing is that students progressing through high school are finding it a lot easier than previous years also their might be a few students a year apart giving hints to lower years on what to write for their answers.

Leading exam boards have drastically lowered the number of marks required for a pass, as experts warn that the education establishment is "fooling itself" into thinking students have done better than they actually have. The new grades, used for the first time this year,  were part of a package of reforms introduced by former  education secretary Michael Gove. Other changes included toughening up syllabuses and cutting down on coursework in a bid to raise academic standards in schools. To prevent students from being penalised for taking the new, harder exams this year, this ensures that the proportion of children awarded pass marks is roughly the same as last year through a process they call “comparative outcomes”. But experts have warned that artificially lowering the pass rates to ensure consistency between different cohorts creates an illusion that students are doing better than they actually are.

TECHNIQUES AND EQUIPMENT FOR UNIT 3:

The main camera angles I will have to use for this idea are close ups and over the shoulder shots, this is mainly because the video needs to catch my reaction on camera this could also be used as the thumbnail for a video if I was going ahead with this idea. The main priority would be for me to connect to the target audiences for this video which would be current students who are revising and might be worried a little going forward and also parents of students who are sitting their exams in a few months in which they can use this video as sort of a guideline on if their son/daughter does or doesn't get the grades their after . in this video I will not only re-react to myself opening my results but also explain what to do after you've got your results, for example whether to go to a college or stay at 6th form to do A-levels, based off what career path a student is looking for. I will need to have a tripod , mic and camera to film this, mainly sot that the majority of the filming done is straight down the camera lens to the people watching, this video is mainly to educated and give opinions for others, for example if you have a student that has only done well in one subject then have he/she go to a college to then focus on that one subject they are good at and enjoy. Or if they have good fantastic grades across the board then its best to further their knowledge on the subjects they did best on by choosing a-levels this will further help them in the future if they are looking for a job or going to university to further their education.

3 ways I could film this idea:

1. Have me give an informative and learning based video for students and parents to discuss about before and after their son/daughters exams. This will hopefully help people on what career path they would like to take or their future. I do not intend this to cause arguments between families and friends , I just this to be as informative as it possibly can towards everyone, also to know that I have an effect on a potential student having a fantastic and enjoyable career would be fantastic.

2. Interview a student that has recently got their GCSEs results and are stuck on what to do now and what is best for them. I believe that having an actual reaction from someone who isn't just myself can have an effect on others watching, it will be better having someone else telling me what they want to do in the future and maybe have them cme back in a few months after theyve started colleg or a levels to give there opinion on how well they've started.

3. Interview an elderly person who at their age looks back on the decision that they made all those years ago and how that effected their lives, also giving an inside on what career path they took, the highs and lows from their busy working career and how they are at the place they are today. also include how their lives will have ended up if they had changed their minds and chosen to do something different after finishing school exams.

Peer reviews for idea 3:

Matthew Dickson - I like this idea but it may be a bit difficult to gather all the information needed to get your point across to other students and parents, I think that staying with idea 1 is the best choice for you and for your FMP film. I would prefer to see an informative and educational video rather than just a reaction video for your FMP.

Peter Penfold - I agree with everything matt has said about this idea and to make a film about your first idea rather than this it would be better.

EVALUATING ALL RESEARCH DONE ACROSS ALL THREE IDEAS:

All research covered/evaluated for idea 1 - From this idea which will be my final chosen idea to film my FMP on, I have learnt a lot of important information that will be included in my film, for example how the seizures that I have occur, what side effects come with having them and how this may effect a persons life. This has also helped me understand more about the condition I am living with and will for the rest of my life, its not just an informative learning video for the target audiences of epilepsy specialists and sufferers but also a learning process for me and understanding what t o do If someone I know is having a seizure, how a process of recovery works and that flashing lights or shaking on the floor is not how every seizure works its just how everyone thinks epilepsy works. I have discovered that their are many people living with the same condition as me, although it is a very rare condition their are a surprising amount that do have a condition which was quite eye-catching for me. I know that I will have to do a lot explaining in my video and that it can't be done at a fast paced styles, it will need to be broken down so that the learning part of my video can be taken by other students, the research on part-complex seizures was very interesting and the reviews that some people have given on the tablets people have to take or any complaints were very overwhelming.

The issues that I need to be aware of and explore are quite similar , I will need to be careful on what I decide to explain throughout my video, nothing to over the top that some people may struggle to understand, try to keep it to a level that everyone can understand and learn from and don't go overboard with too much information as some people could lose interest. Issues I want to explore are the stats , facts and opinions from others, give my thoughts towards them and debate about them with others who are interested by the topic. I will also be trying to get an interview in a hospital or doctors and have the discussion filmed so that the audiences get a view from my perspective when I have hospital/doctor appointments. The simple answer to what has inspired me is that its a condition that I am currently living with and will for the rest of my life and that I want to share everything that I know about it as well as everything I have researched about it so that I can spread the word of my condition that is rare compared to others that get effected by flashing lights unlike mine, the inspiration has just come within me and I hope that some people give me praise for making a video that is personal to me.  The test shoots went very well and I want my actual video to go as well as the test shoots went, just a slight mistake from the script and a slight background noise picked up by the camera is all that was stopping the test shots from being nearly perfect, however I of course won't be using them for my actual film as their is small things to be improved.

All research covered/evaluated for idea 2 :  I have learnt a lot about how lions are falling by the numbers and within the next 15-20 years could become extinct, I had planned to research this idea mainly because I wanted to see peoples reactions to the shocking numbers that the wwf are trying to get people to adopt and savce the number of african lions from decreasing anymore. If I had chosen to make this video my FMP film it would've been difficult for me to try and find footage of someone who had done what I had planned to do before I changed my idea, it was a topic that I id want to learn more about and pass on the information to others in a video because it is very alarming and im sure their will be some peopmewho will want to take action on this straight away as they didn't realise that this was going to happen or had happened and now that time is running out to save the species of lion it needs to get the attention of everyone.

The ideas that planned to explore were mainly careful because their wasnt really any chance of mye trying to get test shots for my footage and that I had to choose stock footage instead adn this was also another eason why I decied not to go ahead with this idea becuase it would be too difficult to film lions in a zoo or at a pet sin a specialist lion zoo somewhere. Ideas that I wanted to explore was how lions have been treated the past 10-15 years how they've been fed up until the recent years and how well they are kept at safety, the likelihood of them potentially escaping is low which is ap among many negatives of this topic, I also didnt want to film on this topic because it may have people getting a little upset over the fact that animals like these are being treated like garbage and that people need to realise they arent looking after them properly then send themmback into the wild its as simple as that,  the test shoots I was unable to film any because I wasnt allowed to flm the animals as ell but  what I have learnt and discovered is the most improtant as I think that myself just passing this important information on to tohters depsite not mkaing a film aboiut it is still a achievement .

All research covered/evaluated for idea 3:  From this idea I have learnt and discovered a lot about English GCSEs and just exams as a whole can effect one persons life, its not just how well they have or havent done its also how their going to take their next step for their desired career path. It is a young age of 16 where you wouldn't expect some people to know what they are looking for in life so it is very interesting to look back upon in years to come to see what wouldve happened if a person had changed their mind and to go to a college instead of doing a-levels or thy other way around. It was very interesting to find out what some past students had put online about how the job that they work fr at the moment is a lot differet to where they thught theyd be considering they taken alevels rather than a college diploma.

Many others had said that they had made the right decision when they were younger and the percentage that said they had was 0% which was quite suprising. This topic was one that I enjoed researching about and would have chosen as my final idea but I feel that my original and first idea is best as its a more personal topic and moreedcutaiona and informative than the two others. II was inspired by this because I had passed my English GCSE and wanted to find out what other people had done after passing hat as well as their other exams and what they are currently studying . If I had chosen to go with this idea for my FMP I would've had to gather opinions and facts form more students online and get their retrospective, I would've had to be careful of using some peoples thoughts and not post anything that they might have thought was too personal to them, they could get negative feedback from tothers telling them they shouldve done better. The test shoots were fine, could've been filmed a little better and also could've been captured in a school or college for a better perspective and a more likely environment where people would collect their results rather than sitting at home.

Problem solving:

The most likely cause of problems from my FMP is the target audience, i am aware that their will be several people that are a little unsure of why i chose to base my production off this topic but also what my video involves. Epilepsy is a subject that some will struggle to understand which is why i recommend people that are interested to learn more about it. I may also have trouble with shooting space as the majority of it will be filmed at home,  however I won't be filming anything if there isn't enough space as that may make the film look rushed or show poor camera operating skills. Other possible problems that may occur is background/surround sounds from indoors for example washing machine or cooker, I will not be doing any filming until I am certain that there won't be any sound that may oversee recordings for my production. I will be discussing with parents on times when filming won't be an issue and that I won't be in certain spaces that might be needed for other things, another issue is the lighting that could effect recordings if there is a possible power-cut or a bulb that has blown, its best to wait rather than try to fight through it and just accept that the lighting isn't as good as planned but will go ahead with what I have recorded anyway.

The top 5 problems that can occur when filming with a camera:

1. bad sound

2. wrong delivery formats

3. Miscommunication of the brief

4. changing the brief halfway through

5. filming doesn't go to plan

Other problems to take note of are:

Having a unclear story , the video being too long and having poor cutaways.

How I plan to solve these issues if they occur can be quite simple, for an unclear story all I would have to do is to go further in-depth and show more information on my chosen topic and elaborate on some points that people may not be familiar with, however if none of this works then maybe shorten the story or the points that were in mind to show the target audience need to be reduced, have some that people may be familiar with rather than go off topic and waffle about something people just won't understand or research about to lear more.

The video being too long- now of course the obvious response to this would be to just edit parts that you think aren't as important as others yet still have the main objective or point that you want to put across, in this case ' PRIDE '. Another point to keep in mind is that audiences won't be keen on having to watch a long video they will only be interested in what the video is about and won't want a pointless discussion about something else that then leads on to the topic in mind, people will just want the video to be straight to the point, nothing in-between.

Poor cutaways- When you jump too suddenly from graphics to text with music and a voice-over, the video can look scattered and sound chaotic, especially when you are trying to squeeze in all of your main points. Making sure that all the information is there wont mean that the video does flow nicely. When shooting, make sure to take some extra footage. Maybe theres voice-overs that aren't as clear and that weren't caught at first, so there will be need to cover this mistake. Before shooting, think about the links between the topics that will be mentioned and create transitions that are clean and understandable.

Daily log: This will help to see the progression i have been making and that i can look back on what i have done and look for any improvements going forward.

8th March - After finishing my pre-production presentation i will take all feedback onboard going forward with my pre production paperwork and select the idea that the audience found most interesting and would like to learn more about, i chose epilepsy as its a topic that not many people know much about and  i want to get my points across as i have lived with the condition for over 10 years.

12th March - I began my proposal and explained thoroughly my plan and how i wanted to film my FMP, that being at home, college and in public. Then i started my pre-production paperwork, that being my risk assessment and location repot as well as finishing to help towards my fmp video.

15th March - Finish the rest of the FMP pre production work, that being shooting schedules, storyboards and equipment rate card. It did not take me as long as i thought it would but i am happy that with explaining what i have done in detail and i will now be ready to take some test shots before going to film my FMP to then find what positives and negatives their are when im filming at home .

16th March- Filmed test shots at home, I spent a long time looking back on what i had filmed and chose some to add in my FMP and then some that weren't that good would be put on my Wix website to show that i have done test shots but explain why i dont need to use them but also explain why some of the shots i need and why they'll help with my FMP.

18th March - Second run of test shots, this time at college and have an interview from 2 people from my class, one who has had epilepsy for over 10 years and a close friend that will always be there to help if a seizure occurs. I had planned to film an over the shoulder interview but instead recorded without their faces on show and had it like a short podcast instead.

23rd  March- I added this to my previous test shoots on my apple mac at college and watch everything throughly keeping in mind what i liked to keep and what i wasn't keen on. Any test shots that i wanted to keep will have to be filmed again but making sure that it was better than the previous shots, the one thing that i knew i couldn't rush was to keep my test shots rather than film it again and make it look better.

26th March - Check that all my pre-production paperwork is up to date, equipment rate card was needed to be included and also the shooting schedules which i knew were very important to follow. I then got all the equipment ready to take home and then film all that i needed to at home.

13th April - Filming my FMP at home, the majority of my FMP need to be filmed at home and luckily having 2 weeks off during easter it gave me plenty of time to film numerous times if i was unhappy with how the camera looked, how the camera was set up when filming the interviews and the different lighting and background noise i took all into account before being happy with what i had filmed and couldn't wait to edit it back at college.

24th April- I began to edit what i had filmed during the easter half term , in which the majority of shots recorded i was very happy with. I still needed to record some more in college to further my knowledge of epilepsy and to also show that other people have been living with the condition for sometime and that their are many different types of epilepsy that people can be diagnosed with.

28th April- I began filming the two people who had volunteered to be recorded about the topic of epilepsy however there were some problems that i had to deal with. For example i had wanted to film the interview visually so that people knew what the people who i was talking to looked like but eventually i had to change these plans.

2nd May-  I then had to wait a few days for the people who were willing to have me film them catch up with there work, i did help them with their work as they were helping me with mine as i thought that would be fair for me to help, they both finished pre production paperwork earlier than expected.

23rd may - I began filming the second part to my FMP but this time instead of filming a visual interview i chose to audio record the interviews and add that to my FMP video as a short podcast. Alexis and Matt didn't want to be judged by their opinions toward epilepsy so this was the best way to use there points on epilepsy and still be able to include it in my FMP video.

25th may - I began editing my FMP fully and i knew that this would take several days as i did have some shots that were filmed that i didn't need and were just used as backup shots if my footage was lost. I usually lose a few shots and have done in previous projects but this time i had to save all my photos to everywhere on my mac, downloads, Midkent raid , documents and to my college email.

26th may - I then began adding small audio clips over my FMP also taking into account that a few of these shots will be needed in my showreel for unit 11. I left 2 shots out of my FMP video to then use in my showreel but a few days later i lost those and had to film them again, i tried not to rush them and i knew i had a few days spare before the deadline so i did have time to go over what i needed to re-do.

30th may- I came to college to then add my re-filmed shots and with help from other classmates then made sure that I didn't end up losing these as well, i then began to re-edit all my shots and was gradually developing my video to the best of my ability.

31st may - As i gradually came to the end of editing my FMP video i began to take notes about everything work and filming for me to put in my evaluation, positives and negatives of both and try to make them equal and not make it seem that i had more negatives in my FMP as that'll make it look like i could have tried more but also that i don't all have positives as there is no way that any project goes 100% to plan. Even the most famous and well-known films don't go to plan and the finalised filming of films is far from the original idea .

3rd June- I have finished my FMP and have read through my post production presentation so that when it is presented i know thoroughly what to talk about, including positives and negatives and how both will help me in the future. I am very happy with what i have accomplished from this course and i will potentially get an apprenticeship working for a hospital radio after they were very impressed with my video.

Evaluation - on my FMP production:

I will be evaluating this by explaining-

positives, negatives , what I would've changed and how this  project can help toward my future career.

Positives- The first thing that I am more than happy with for my FMP production was the fact that despite it being a topic that is personal to me, I wasn't told that I had to change my topic to something more outside the box. It may have been controversial to have chosen this to base my FMP on but its what I want people to know about me and that I'm not sort of scared to let people know about it, this did require a lot of research on certain things that I weren't sure on but overall I'm happy with the opinions, facts and conversations I have had with people on this topic for my FMP. I didn't have many issues when It came to the pre-production paperwork, I was happy with how everything had been planned out which includes my activity logs that I included and updated a few weeks after my presentation and filming. I was excited with the possible options I had on where to film and how to get conversations going on my topic of epilepsy and I then planned to film my production at home as well as at college which turned out to be a good choice. When filming at college it helped that having another student that had been living with epilepsy for a while was open to me having a discussion with her about what type of epilepsy she has, how long she has had it for and what she does to help against any side effects she suffers from. As well as having a friend willing to talk about it as well was great, giving opinions on what he thought epilepsy was, how it can effect others and what he would do if he clearly noticed someone whether that be a member of the public or a sibling having a fit. Moving onto the good parts from filming at home, the first being that background noises weren't a problem and didn't need to be edited which I was glad about as it gave me more time to focus on other bits of footage recorded. Furthermore, I benefitted from having space to move around and film using different angles, not having to film in a cramped area did help and from my video it is very noticeable that it did make it a little easier. Editing my production wasn't a problem and all that was needed was to play the majority of footage recorded back, add a few SFX , background noises and transitions and the video was published to the best of my abilities.

Negatives-  To begin with I am very aware that there is several parts of footage that I haven't used in my finalised video and that is purely because I did not want the video lasting 20+ mins and therefore have had to shorten it to just under 10 mins. This might be a good idea because a video that lasts too long may not keep people as interested compared to the video being shorter and won't lose the interest of the majority of the audience. But there is always the thought that I haven't included some parts that I should have and instead used clips that aren't as informative and don't give any facts or opinions on the topic which could lose interest from some, this may come into effect when I receive my final grading so this will be looked back upon once received to see whether I was right to live some parts out but should've included something that may have a been a little more informative rather than laid back. Moving onwards to the storyboards and the shooting schedules, to put it simply I did not spend enough time on these parts of pre-production paperwork. The shooting schedules ended up being all out of date due to filming what I needed to in college and helping others film theres before mine which I know from now is a bad choice, I should only help others once finished filming and only if they are way behind and might not finish come the deadline. I had to update my activity log and explain the changes that I had to make after the length of time I'd worked on this in college and helped others that were struggling. My storyboards I didn't draw, I had planned what I wanted to be drawn and what camera angles, SFX and the number of people in the shot before having my parents draw my storyboards for me. I was happy with the majority of what had been drawn however a few weren't used when it came to editing/shortening my film as I felt that I wouldn't be needed however this may be completely wrong and I might have needed to keep and include it in my FMP.

What I would've changed -  Despite my FMP production being on a topic that can easily have been changed to keep it less personal, its something that I wouldn't have purely because I want people to know what I have been living with and that its not something that I want to hide from the public.

There are only 5 things that I would change from my FMP:

1. The amount of time spent on making and sending out questionnaires to the public.

2. Spend more time on test shoots.

3. Stick to the activity log as much as I can as it is originally used for planning the FMP as you go but I didn't stick to it that well and had to rush a few things.

4. Ask for better peer reviews from students and ask to name positives and negatives with reasons instead of just asking others to write what is said by me.

5. When making presentations go over it so it won't be awkward when being filmed on camera, make it look like the topic means something and that my life depended on it.

How this project can help toward my future career plans:

I am currently looking for a job and have been offered to work for a hospital radio, however this is only voluntary work. This production has given me a lot more skills added to the ones I already have and has inspired me to enjoy practical work more than I have done over the past few years being on this media course. When studying it at school it was of course a lot different and only really focused on socio-economic demographic groups and making a film based on a film genre. Adding that to what I have learned now has made me realise how much I love this subject in education and would love to begin to make money on this in the future. During level 3 I began to have a love for radio and podcasting which is now what I will be working on for the next year at least hopefully, I will be using what I learnt in level 2 and the first year of level 3 with sound recordings and podcasting to lengthen my time working on a hospital radio and then work further into the radio industry and get to where I want to be in about 10 years time which will be working for Kent fm and having a decent payday.

Ethical issues towards epilepsy:

One of the ethical epilepsy dilemmas concerns the subject of driving. In order to apply for a driving license in the Uk, a person has to have been seizure free for 12 months with medication. In addition, If they experience a seizure whilst owning a driving license , they have to surrender it and start the 12 month period again. Of course, this raises the issue of whether a person will always report their seizures to relevant authorities and GPs. In the USA there are some states where it is not mandatory for the GP to report on the seizures which in turn raises another ethical issue of do they breach their patients confidentiality.

In developing countries there are different issues of ethical concern related to epilepsy care. A country with limited resources may not want to channel those resources from epilepsy care to research. They may feel they wish to keep them to a afford treatment for the poor and therefore ignore the high treatment gap for epilepsy care. We believe in this world that reasonable health care is a basic human right. Furthermore do countries with plentiful  resources have an ethical responsibility to help relieve the high epilepsy treatment gap of poor countries ? Genetic testing can also raise significant ethical issues for people with epilepsy, their family members and health care providers. Genetic information may present significant challenges for people with epilepsy and their family members. One of the main challenges that I will face is the choice to become a parent and the possibility of passing on my epileptic gene to any children I may have. My particular epilepsy is a new mutation in me , both my parents have been tested and my family history looked into and their is no evidence of epilepsy. I have been wanting to have at least 2 children when I am older, however there is a 50/50 chance that one of my Children may be born with the epileptic gene that I have. So there is a obvious growing importance about when and how patients should be tested and combined with the need to ensure that affected individuals and their families can make informed choices. Research is currently being done to ascertain the genetic bases for different responses to the medication used to treat epilepsy hopefully this can improve the quality of life by preventing , controlling and curing the disease.

There is a growing trend towards surgical intervention concerning children with medically intractable epilepsy. This is a very disabling condition with uncontrolled seizures that can result in significant injury or death. The ethical challenge of surgical decision making is the effect that it may have on developmentally delayed children. The etiology or 'cause' of the seizures must be correct i.e. localised to a certain area of the brain and it must be justifiable that the brain development would not be harmed after the operation.
