Media courses at university:

1st - Newcastle

  • Entry standards are relatively high, with most courses asking for ABB or higher A level (or equivalent). Offers of places on any degree are made on the basis of individual achievement.

  • The university also looks at other evidence in UCAS applications that indicate potential to succeed on a degree programme.

  • The level of study is small below 5,000 so that can benefit people who prefer to study in small groups or by themselves rather than being in a class with more than 30 people daily

2nd - Strathclyde

  • The course at this college is larger than most with over 10,000 students attending, this may help someone choose to study here as with that many students studying then it must be popular.

  • Their are more women that study media here than men, this might be a good move for young women to meet new friends that they'll be living with for a while.

  • The majority of work is full-time, this might put off anyone that wanted to work here part-time to then maybe fit around a weekend job, however that looks unlikely as this university is a lot more dedicated to full-time media students

3rd - Loughborough

  • Applicants are normally expected to have at least 3 A levels and in many cases specific subjects are required. Typical offers for A level applicants range from A*AA–BBB depending on the chosen course.

  • General Studies is not normally accepted, although there are a small number of courses that will accept it where it complements other subjects taken.

  • The university accepts a wide range of alternative UK and international qualifications

S.W.O.T analysis upon my skills and equalities:

My Strengths- Teamworker, good communication skills, willing to give feedback and listen to others for improvements. I tend to have a positive attitude even if their is many steps to make towards my goal nothing can keep me down.

Weaknesses: Being given negative feedback as it makes me feel that i could have done better. I sometimes have confidence issues towards my work and it can affect elsewhere e.g. home and being with family.

Opportunities: To extend my knowledge of the media industry, so that my career goals can be achieved and i can have a successful career path, extending into retirement.

Threats: Little experience in the media industry, depending on university places this may put you in debt. having a negative mind set towards my work may lead to me being unable to achieve my aspirations.

peer Assessment of my SWOT analysis ( Ethan Newman )

Seeing his S.W.O.T analysis it is put together well. All points have been discussed well and there is a clear understanding features.

Action plan to improve my weaknesses:

Being given negative feedback, i need to not allow my emotions to get the best of me and i must take the feedback given to me onboard and make sure that i improve what is needed to the best of my ability. This should not have a effect on my confidence as i have other units that i perhaps will do better with but i need to focus more to progress further on the course. This shouldn't have any effect with issues outside of college as i don't want  this to give me a negative mind-set for the future, when it comes to employment and future job careers.

Specific job titles/roles and their positives and negatives:

1.  Job-hunting apps, an example of this would be the: Indeed Job Search, this app is world renowned for being arguable the most popular job searching app for the public to begin their ideal careers, this also including location, salary and how each industry grew through the years. Main job openings in towns nearby can be based on your devices signal telling it where you are. Set up email alerts to be noticed when new jobs appear in your certain category. When you find a job you like, you can save it so you can apply later when you've got time to focus. Or, if you have uploaded your résumé, you can send it in straightaway with a customised message attached. The app keeps a record of each job you apply for.

Another example of an job search app can be ' Facebook Jobs, that is included with the Facebook social media  app '. Facebook is usually used as a social place to connect with friends, but it has a huge jobs board as well. The Job links is on the left column of your desktop or laptop Facebook home page, under the Explore section.

If you find a posting that appeals to you, tap the Apply Now button. This will then take you over to the employer's Facebook page. Hit Apply Now again, and up pops a page with your name and any education or employment history that you've made public on your Facebook page.  When you hit Send, the information goes to the employer as a Facebook message.

Its Best feature is the ability to send an employer a summary of yourself based on your Facebook profile, rather than having to create a new profile and upload something different.

2. An explanation of job types and all the possibilities that come when applying for different jobs:

All possible job types/categories:

Admin, Automotive , Banking, Biotech; if your ideal career choice is to work in accounting then one of these possible job roles are definatly suitable for you.

Labour, the government, Groceries and health care are all suitable for anyone that wants a career path based around the usual general business. Other jobs that are part of different job categories are Professional services, Pharmaceutical, Purchasing Procurement and Quality Control. Different jobs require different abilities for you to be capable of working along this career path, for e.g. Law Enforcement; Educational requirements vary for law enforcement jobs: while federal law enforcement jobs tend to require at least a bachelor’s degree, some police officers can get started in the field with on-the-job training or a few years of college or military experience and Technology , the industry is booming, and your career can flow right along with it. You don’t necessarily need a degree to get these jobs. Pick up the necessary skills via online courses, bootcamps, or practical experience, and many employers will put you to work.

3. Job types within Universities

There are many different job roles that can get you closer to achieving the degree that your looking for. For example;

The disciplines for an agriculture degree will differ completely from a degree in Media and communications, The job types and roles will vary as well due to the different disciplines, for example a computer science degree will feature the role of Academic research and Technical elements compared too the discipline of Biological Sciences and the type being a PHD. You can also find a career  more easily from the location options, if for instance you are living in the North East of England and are wanting to find a career path in law for example, the best law courses might not be located in the North East of England and instead located in the south, with some students this will then have to force them into changing what they originally wanted to learn as the location of where they live and where they need to go for the course are to far apart and it would be easier to study a course closer to home.

4. Internships :

An internship will come with certain Study structures to show how the course is planned and what achievements  you can add towards your career path. The first year of an internship is to understand your position working for an organisation that being a student or a beginner, it will usually not include pay to begin with but the work and experienced gained throughout will then prove to be very important towards requirements that will be asked for a further internship that you wish to study. There are possible internships for foreign students are small to begin with then will gradually all add towards a larger final project that students and trainees will be prepared by everything they have studied previously in the course.

5. Apprenticeships:

There are many positives and few negatives when it comes to studying a course as part of an apprenticeship. The most noticeable positive is that the pay that comes whilst learning a topic or course that your interested in as well as Practical Experience for the future, " Earn whilst you learn " is the famous quote for students that have chosen an apprenticeship to study. The other main positive to take from an apprenticeship is the no-debt policy, this will leave you with no payments to be made or due, You will start life after your apprenticeship course debt free.  However their are some negatives to take from an apprenticeship course, the main one being that some careers wont allow access to the certain preferred career, this could leave young adults not knowing what job route to take. The only other possible reason to put of young adults and students is the experience of working within a university, some will claim to not wanting to attend a university to study but some will look back on their past as a missed opportunity to learn more about the real world and travelling and meeting new people rather than staying in a location that students would be more familiar with.

my 5 year plan:

|In 2019,  I plan to be studying a separate media course,  hoping to achieve the grades i need to progress into the industry. Im hoping that the second year of the other course will help me to further my knowledge within the media industry and also improve my career goals.

In 2020-  I see myself working within the media industry itself. I know that i will be starting from the bottom, this will mean i will be working as a runner, crew member or as an assistant.

In 2021 years- I hope to be in a good and stable work place that will benefit me and others ( mainly Family), hopefully with a decent wage and gaining experience at much more wider range of information.

In 2022- I will potentially have moved on from what i would consider a starting place within the industry and will begin looking for a more inviting work place and environment.

In 2023- I am predicting that i will be a crew member of a working and stable studio that works for advertising, filming, making of TV shows and experiences like no other that i can then use to rise up the ranks and maybe potentially become an assistant manager or main cameraman/crew member.
